In the Commons, Leader of the House Lucy Powell is responding to questions on the government business, as is done every Thursday.

Among other things, she is asked by her Tory shadow Chris Philp about Labour staffers going to campaign for the Democrats in the US presidential election – read about the row here.

Ms Powell responds by pointing out such campaigning happens in every election.

“Look, campaigning, abroad happens, in every election, and people do this in a personal capacity as well he knows,” Ms Powell said.

She added: “It is a bit rich, isn’t it, really, coming from the party opposite?

“I mean, their would-be leaders who spent weeks, debating and arguing over who would vote or who wouldn’t vote for Donald Trump.

“And the former prime minister, Liz Truss, went to the Republican National Convention and spent her time there discrediting the sitting president.”

Reparations position ‘hasn’t changed’

The other hot topic of the day is the discussion of slavery reparations at the Commonwealth leaders summit.

Mr Philp also asked if it is still government permission to not enter discussions about reparations.

Ms Powell responded: “The issue of reparations is an important one.

“And I’m glad that he’s raised it because we do recognise the horrific impacts and the understandable and ongoing strength of feeling across the Commonwealth and other communities about these issues.

“But he’s he’s right. Our positions on reparations hasn’t changed.”
