Job Summary

The Rep are looking for an Assistant Director for our January production of COMMUNITY. Set in inner-city Birmingham, COMMUNITY is a coming-of-age comedy drama which explores identity and belonging, and friendship. It premiers at The Rep before going on a 2-week community venue tour.

Job Description

The Assistant Director for COMMUNITY will be:

Supporting the Director through the rehearsal process, actors with line learning and aiding the smooth running of the production

Support the requirements of the rehearsal room to note take, leading rehearsals when required, delivering written and video records of progress, liaising with creatives, stage management and production to assist with scheduling rehearsals and calls and other tasks as requested

Support the creative, producing and technical teams to ensure effective and efficient lines of communication between departments

During the community tour, the Assistant Director will lead the wraparound activity for audiences in the performance spaces, such as writing workshops, artist talks/post show discussions. We anticipate between 2-3 activities per week during the 2-week tour

Support the smooth delivery of accessible performances during the run and the smooth-running of press, marketing and educational events associated with the production.

Taking an active role in contributing to the good welfare of the company, helping to build a creative and accessible environment in which everyone is empowered to do their best work

Other reasonable duties to aid the smooth running of the production.

The assistant director need to be exclusively available to the production from Monday 6 January, through to Saturday 1 February 2025.

Then, during the run in the Door W/C 3rd February, the assistant director will support the delivery of access performances and wraparound activity associated with the run.

From W/C 10th February 2025, the Assistant Director will collaborate with the Director on planning and delivery of any wraparound activity associated with the tour, such as pre/post show talks and workshops.

The Assistant Director will also be responsible for overseeing the smooth delivery of any access performances delivered as part of the tour, which we anticipate being 1-2 performances total.

Person specification

Essential criteria:

  • Live in commutable distance of West Midlands and be committed to working in this area
  • Passionate about new writing
  • Interest or experience of community touring and non-traditional performance spaces
  • Interested in Directing, with interest in pursuing a career in Directing in their future.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience of working as an Assistant Director on at least 1 other production, or experience in a role with relevant transferrable skills
  • Interest or experience working with wraparound activity, such as organising artist talks and workshops
  • Experience and/or interest in facilitation
  • a comprehensive understanding of Pakistani culture and heritage
