With summer behind us, many holidaymakers will shift their attention from beach holidays to some of Europe’s best winter destinations.

Christmas markets are a big attraction for those looking to travel during the colder months, and one lesser-known destination has been touted as an underrated option.

Gothenburg, Sweden, is located on the country’s west coast and is its second largest city behind the capital Stockholm.

The city is famed for its brilliant Christmas markets as well as an amusement park.

Liseberg Amusement Park holds its own Christmas market each year, allowing visitors to walk through the park lit with thousands of lights.

Market stalls sell classic Christmas treats such as sweets and ornaments for the home.

The market stays open from late November until early January, giving people over a month to plan their visit.

Skyscanner will offer you flights from London to Gothenburg for as little as £29 depending on what time you fly.

One Tripadvisor review said Gothenburg is Sweden’s best city.

They added: “Visited this city on my first trip to Sweden where I got to visit, Malmo, Jonkoping and of course Stockholm – while the capital city was full of important buildings like any other capital.

“Jonkoping [is] a beautiful town and Malmo a nice little town – Gothenburg was lively, fizzy and the most amazing place in Sweden, I found a lot of immigrants too here, much more than other cities and always feels great.”

Another added: “Gothenburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The sky is very blue, the people are the nicest in the world. Food is wonderful and tour was very well done.

“My grandmother left Sweden at that port in the early 1900’s, so it was very emotional for me.”
