A matter of weeks separated the end of summer recess in parliament from party conference season – a reminder of just how congested the political calendar is.

While observers will note the new government has had little time actually in office, it is nonetheless possible to offer a preliminary assessment of its initial progress – and the tone being set for the five-year term to come.
