A recent study has rounded up the UK’s best market towns, with one pretty little village in Hampshire named among them.

Alresford was included in a list of 15 market towns published by the Daily Mail. The newspaper consulted property experts and estate agents to compile the list.

Commenting on the selection process, the news outlet stated: “Most high streets these days are a sad mix of vape shops, Costas and probably a betting shop or two.

“So, where do you move to if you want a strong community, welcoming coffee shops and vibrant atmosphere all within walking distance? The answer is a market town.

“With their gravel-voiced traders, colourful open-air stalls and milling crowds, market towns are now some of the most sought-after postcodes in the country.”

With its cobbled streets, historic buildings, and vibrant community, Alresford offers a charming escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

As visitors stroll through the town centre, they are transported to the Georgian era, with its quaint shops, traditional pubs, and traditional architecture perpetuating the homogeneity.

The weekly market is a must-see for those who like fresh produce, local crafts, and unique souvenirs.

Alresford is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with the River Arle winding its way through the town and providing a picturesque setting for walks or boat trips.

For those seeking outdoor adventures, the nearby countryside offers a wealth of hiking and cycling trails.

Beyond its natural beauty, Alresford has a rich cultural heritage, boasting the Alresford Museum to delve into the town’s history and heritage, and periodical festivals and concerts to art exhibitions taking place year round.

The Daily Mail wrote: “The bijou Georgian town of Alresford takes its Thursday markets seriously.

“Traders sell everything from mobile phone accessories to award-winning bread, cakes and eggs.

“There is a book shop and stalls selling organic foods, olive oils, logs from a local supplier and even cycle repairs. One old favourite is Derek Price who grows his own herbs, flowers and vegetables.”
