Marrakech in Morocco is the perfect place for an autumn getaway where you can bask in 30C heat before winter hits.

Britons already dreading days getting shorter and colder temperatures should consider this destination for a holiday in October. Then, the average daily maximum is 30C, while the minimum is still a balmy 17C.

The city, known for its vibrant culture, is less than a four-hour flight away from the UK, with direct flights taking off from London airports.

Even better, it has been named by Time Out as the top location for a budget holiday. Marrakech is frequently referred to as the ‘Red City’, because of the shade of the walls surrounding its old town district.

There are so many places to see and things to do in Marrakech, so it’s important to plan your trip carefully to maximise your time there.

The alleyways of the Marrakech medina will fascinate you – this treasure trove of shops and eateries cannot be missed.

The area marks the original walled settlement around which the rest of the city was built. As you walk through the maze-like streets, you’ll feel the bustle of the city.

One of the most notable aspects of the city is its architecture. Marrakech is a picture-perfect city with bright and unique buildings and decor.

The traditional feel of the area is heightened by the contemporary designers who pay homage to the city’s history. Craftsmen can be found creating modern pieces but still using historic techniques.

The best way to explore the city is to walk around and see what you can find – while there might be certain places you definitely want to visit, you can often find charming little spots which are undiscovered by tourists.

To see the city, you should allow three days to visit the main historical sites and then add on a couple more days to explore the rest of the area at a leisurely pace. Those interested in art and culture could spend a whole week exploring Marrakech.
