Euro 2024 favourites England get their tournament officially under way as they open their Group C slate with a match against 33rd-ranked Serbia on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen.
The Three Lions have never won a European Championship, but are considered the most likely side to emerge victorious in this summer’s edition given the sheer star power along the roster.
Still, there are some concerns over a few holes on the England roster, partly thanks to injuries, especially along the back line. It will be up to Gareth Southgate to match the lofty expectations of their fans and the pre-tournament betting market.
They match up against Serbia, who qualified second behind Hungary amidst a weak group that included Montenegro, Lithuania, and Bulgaria. A 3-0 friendly win over Sweden coming into the Euros will give them hope, but they suffered defeat to Austria prior to that as well.

England vs. Serbia prediction, odds
- Moneyline lean: Draw (+340)
- Score prediction: England 1-1 Serbia
England do not come into this tournament in good form, having won just one of their last five matches following a strong two-year stretch before that. They have defensive weaknesses due to age and injury, but are also not performing up to snuff in the attack.
While the Three Lions will not find themselves on the outside looking in for the knockout stage, they may have a few hiccups early in this competition that betray their inability to live up to the lofty expectations as tournament favourites.

England vs. Serbia best bet
- Pick: England over 5.5 corners
- Odds: -120 (BetMGM)
Whether England win this handily or get desperate towards the end amidst another anemic attacking performance, they love to win set pieces with verticality. That was the case in their friendly defeat to Iceland when they picked up seven corners, as well as their 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina before that when they racked up 11.
In fact, they’ve gone over this total in six straight matches across a variety of different performances and results.
Serbia, meanwhile, conceded 10 corners to Sweden last time out despite keeping a clean sheet, while Russia collected eight in a man-up victory back in March. This is a low bar for the Three Lions to clear and they should see it through comfortably.
England vs. Serbia prop bet
- Pick: Both teams to score — Yes
- Odds: +100 (BetMGM)
Serbia have a wealth of attacking players, and England are weakest at the back. The Three Lions have conceded in four of their last five games, including their final tournament warmup friendly, a humbling and disappointing 1-0 defeat to Iceland.
The likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic need service to thrive, but they both come into the tournament in solid club form and should manage to poke holes in the weakened England defensive ranks.
