Sisk scores top league spot after signing for £300m stadium job | Construction News

John Sisk scooped top spot in the May league table after winning a bumper job at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.

The £300m job, which will see Sisk build a new North Stand at the 53,000-seat stadium, sees Sisk take its first gold spot of 2024, according to construction data firm Glenigan.

Preconstruction work began at the Manchester site last November. The project will see 7,900 extra seats added to the stadium’s capacity. Sisk expects it to be ready in time for the 2025/26 football season.

In addition to the new stadium seating, a hotel, workspace areas and public realm space are expected to be completed by late 2026.

Winvic also shot into the medal spots thanks to a single job. The contractor took the silver medal after it scooped a £250m job to build a bumper science facility in Oxfordshire.

The 370,000 square foot facility, being built for Siemens Healthineers, will design and manufacture superconducting magnets used for MRI patient scans. The scheme is set to support more than 1,300 jobs when fully operational.

Meanwhile, Balfour Beatty rounded off the top three league spots after winning three jobs worth a total £223.8m. The biggest of those, valued at £211m by Glenigan, will see the contractor expand Rolls Royce’s submarine manufacturing site in Derby.

The work will include the development of new office and manufacturing facilities to meet higher demand from the Royal Navy. The expansion will create 1,170 new jobs at the Rolls Royce site.

HG Construction took fifth spot thanks largely to a £130m job to build BeCa, an apartment complex on the Old Kent Road. The 170-apartment complex will be built above more than 22,000 square feet of retail space, plus a gym and co-working spaces.

HG Construction replaced Henry on the project after the latter entered administration last June.

JRL, meanwhile, took ninth spot thanks to a £100m job to revamp an office site in west London. The site, called Newcombe House, will be redeveloped into office and retail space, plus housing and a medical centre.

JRL’s contracting arm Midgard officially signed on as a contractor in May but was previously working on a pre-construction agreement. The scheme, designed by Squire and Partners, will see the existing site partially demolished.

Morgan Sindall, which took sixth place in the monthly contractor league, sustained its position atop the rolling annual league after signing a total of 296 jobs worth a combined £2.48bn over the past year.

Winvic jumped into the annual top 10 after a month’s absence, replacing Multiplex in third spot, while Galliford Try took fourth spot, up from seventh in April.

Other than Winvic, no other contractors were new to the top 10 annual league table for May.
