As summer approaches many of us will be looking for the perfect spot for a beach holiday – but it turns out we should be looking north instead of hunting for somewhere abroad.

Tobermory is a tiny seaside town located on the Isle of Mul, Scotland with a population of fewer than 1000 people, but has become known for its remarkable waterfront littered with brightly coloured homes surrounded by an incredibly lush forest as a backdrop.

This beautiful yet tranquil destination is perfect for anyone looking for a laid-back staycation if you enjoy relaxing on the beach, exploring the island’s rich history, or even going on a boat tour to explore Mull’s abundant wildlife which includes seals, dolphins, whales, otters and even golden eagles.

It has been named one of the “best seaside towns in the UK”  by Times Out, as despite the town’s small population it has a “huge charm” according to the publication as many people travel to Tobermory to see its “local puffin population and a rich history of producing magical malt whiskies.”

The Times has also named it one of its top seaside destinations and said that this “lesser-visited” town has “plenty to offer” visitors

Tobermory is surrounded by stunning beaches with the most popular being Calgary Beach which is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland.

Calgary Beach is known for its white sand, turquoise water and spectacular views of the island’s rugged cliffs, rolling hills and forests. It is the perfect place to take a stroll with a camera or enjoy an ice cream at the nearby cafe which is a boat that has been converted into an ice cream shop.

Other nearby beaches such as Langamull Beach and Croig Beach are much quieter but are the hidden gems of Mull’s northern coastline as they are just as beautiful without having to worry crowds.

Mull’s many beaches are the perfect spot for a picnic but another great spot is the Eas Fors Waterfall, considered one of the most beautiful areas on the island as it has picturesque views across Loch Tuath to the island of Ulva.

One thing every visitor should do while in Tobermory is visit the town’s iconic harbour surrounded by many colourful homes, as this vibrant scene with its bustling boats is a great place to take some photographs or enjoy the sights while sipping on a coffee from a local cafe.

Tobermory is also home to Europe’s first catch-and-release aquarium as everything you see in this wondrous place is returned to the sea four weeks later.

The aquarium displays are constantly changing but it often holds up to 60 species at a time, also has a Touch Pool which allows you to get very close to the marine wildlife and also holds an information room to learn more about the island’s sea life.

Anyone who loves history will want to visit the Mull Museum as there are lots of interesting things to explore and read but should enjoy a visit to Glengorm Castle which has been converted into a hotel but visitors can visit the castle’s coffee shop, farm shop as well a take a walk around the estate to take in the sights.

There is also Dùn Ara Fort which is worth a hike to visit as it is a ruined medieval fort which is believed to have been abandoned by Clan MacKinnon.

Once you are hungry, the Isle of Mull Cheese farm and its local cafe, the Glass Barn, are worth the visit as this converted glass barn is a great place to sample the island’s local food.

Here you can eat locally produced cheeses, pork, biscuits, oatcakes, and chutneys while watching the cows graze in the fields nearby.

No seaside holiday is complete without some fish and chips, which is why you should also stop at The Pier Cafe, which as the name suggests sits right at the pier where you can watch the local CalMac ferry and other boats out at sea.

However, Tobermory is famous for its whisky and no stop to the town would be worth it without visiting its historic distillery which was first established in 1798. Try the single malt or their Ledaig range if you prefer something smokier but you can also try their award-winning Hebridean gin.

If you would prefer something sweet then The Galley is also worth mentioning as it was once a church now transformed into a cafe and gift shop which is also great for a cup of tea and a traybake of your choice.

If you are lucky enough to visit Tobermory on a Monday there you can also visit the farmer’s market which sells lots of fresh and delicious local produce to take home with you.

No matter where you go, Tobermory has plenty to do and is a fantastic destination for a seaside holiday due to its natural beauty, local wildlife, tranquil atmosphere and tasty cuisine makes it the perfect spot for a seaside holiday.

Plus, the isle of Mull and its surrounding islands also have plenty of cultural attractions, rich history and breathtaking scenery to explore so you will never be bored in this extraordinary place.
