The world’s healthiest place is in a region of Asia that has some of the globe’s longest living people.

According to the expat experts at William Russell, Okinawa in Japan has the world’s best diet.

A spokesperson said: “The Okinawan diet has numerous health benefits. So much so that Japan has the lowest obesity rates and second longest life expectancy of any developed country.”

Okinawa, an island off the Japanese mainland, is also one of the world’s Blue Zones. It’s home to the world’s longest living women and more people than average live to 100.

But what makes the Okinawan diet so healthy?

The spokesperson said: “The Okinawan diet is centred around fish, seafood, tofu and other nutrient-rich ingredients.”

The diet places a heavy emphasis on soy and fresh fish which means the people eat low levels of saturated fat.

Antioxidants like seaweed and sweet potatoes help to regulate residents’ blood sugar and aid healthy digestion.

Portions are often small in the diet which means residents tend to eat fewer calories than on other diets.

Okinawans also tend to lead an active lifestyle and have regular exposure to sunlight which could contribute to their long lifespans.

The region is one of Japan’s top beach destinations with some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.
