A town in north Cornwall, where people may have “driven through it without stopping” now has another proud accolade to its name. Camelford, located on the River Camel, is now home to one of the UK’s best fish and chip shops.

The staple British dish has always been a tough one to get spot on, and with various culinary awards out there, one small outlet has been named as one of the best in the country. Peckish Fish and Chips has been bestowed the prestigious title thanks to a culmination of reviews from from Google, TripAdvisor and Instagram.

The rankings were determined by a unique index score, taking into account the number of hashtags and views each spot had accumulated on Instagram, as well as their TripAdvisor rankings. The lower the overall index score, the higher the ranking.

Topping the list in a tie for first place were East Coast in Musselburgh, Scotland, and Fish Lounge in South West London, both clearly adored by the public, reports Cornwall Live.

Camelford was previously described as a “bypass” town by Mayor Rob Rotchell during a chat in the Grade-I listed town council building.

“Historically Camelford was much more important but farming is not what it used to be and there are not so many job opportunities around here,” he said. “We’ve been fighting for a bypass for years. All we’re waiting for is for the Department for Transport to say yes or no.”

Since Cllr Rotchell’s interview with CornwallLive, the A39 has taken dramatic steps forward, with the latest plans tripling in cost, but that hasn’t deterred council bosses from carrying on with the proposals.

Despite locals and holiday traffic set for three years of road hell, the plans will eventually make Camelford into a destination town, with its top notch fish and chips adding to the draw.
